“People can only stand so much, and one of these days, there will be a settlement…”
—Senator Harry Truman (in a 1937 Senate speech)

Senator Harry S. Truman made the above statement in a 1937 speech to the Senate about Wall Street greed and self-interest. As much as politicians tell us they’re on our side, Americans know better. They know it when they gasp at the price of critical prescription drugs, or for necessities at the grocery store, and they wonder what they’ll have to give up to get them.

And people know that no matter how serious a problem is or the breadth of its impacts, the result will be the same: our representatives will take no meaningful actions to resolve it.

Politicians and their high-priced consultants play Americans for fools, but they’re not fooling anyone. The question is, are we willing to make the effort necessary to take back our democracy from special interests and partisans unwilling or unable to get anything done?

After being sold out for so long in so many ways, many feel nothing ever changes regardless of whether or not they vote or who gets elected. Yet as hopeless as things may seem, they are not. We can reclaim our democracy if we invest more of ourselves into doing so.

That is the purpose of George Was Right: to help average Americans learn the relatively easy ways they can help repair our failing political system.
